The Christ Church congregation traces its origins to 1776. However, Charles and John Wesley officiated at St. Simons Island’s first religious services on the site of the church almost forty years earlier.
The “Fathers of Methodism in America” preached to the natives beneath the spreading limbs of an enormous oak tree. In 1884, Anson Phelps Dodge, Jr. built the present structure, which replaces an earlier sanctuary partially destroyed by Union troops, in memory of his wife, Ellen, who died on their honeymoon.
Today, this beautiful church with its magnificent stained glass windows and heavily wooded grounds that include a cemetery with graves of early settlers is one of St. Simons’ most treasured landmarks.
