Each year, an estimated 8,000 fans gather at East Beach on St. Simons Island the Friday before the Georgia/Florida football game. Due to the volume of people on the beach, large amounts of waste are typically left behind. This litter could potentially be pulled to sea, harming marine life and the health of the underwater ecosystem.

The University of Georgia Marine Extension Service and Georgia Sea Grant are reaching out to prevent littering. Social media sites have been established asking students to sign a pledge to “Stash Your Trash” and recycle in appropriate bins.

In addition, a Community Beach Sweep cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, November 2 at 7:30am. Volunteers are asked to participate in cleaning up and recycling any items remaining on the beach.

For more information on the “Stash Your Trash” initiative, visit and or contact Diana Orquiola at 678-920-1217 or

Hodnett Cooper encourages fans to act responsibly in cleaning up and recycling their trash.
