4 Day Trips Near St. Simons Island that can’t be missed!

Jekyll Island, only about 20 miles away from St. Simons Island but seems like worlds away because you have to cross over the Sidney Lanier Bridge which separates St. Simons and Jekyll Island. Jekyll Island is well known for their rich aristocratic history as well as for the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, and many other neat places.

Brunswick, if you are looking to browse through a quaint downtown area or maybe you like more commercialized shopping, Brunswick is the place to go. The quiet downtown area is small but packed with antique stores, city markets, and festivals as well as great theaters. Also in Brunswick there is big box stores like Target and Old Navy as well as many chain restaurants to choose from. Also about 20 minutes away from the island makes Brunswick the perfect afternoon trip.

Cumberland Island is a little ways from St. Simons at about an hour away, but it is totally worth it! Once you get to Cumber Island National Seashore you will board the ferry that well take you across the bay to the secluded Cumberland Island. Known for its wildlife it boasts many different species like wild horses, turkeys, alligators, armadillos, and many coastal birds. There are also palmetto forests and beautiful live oak.

Sapelo Island which is a stone’s throw away from St. Simons, however it is only accessible by ferry that departs from Darien, Ga. This barrier island is rich with history and with beauty. Once you make it to the island you are free to meander through the various historic points or you can take in the miles of pristine coastline!

St. Simons Island has so much to offer that we know it may be hard to find the time and desire to slip away for the afternoon. If you do find time to explore outside of the island these options, we be sure not to disappoint!

St Simons was featured on Island Life, where a couple and their children from California move across country for a slow paced, more relaxed coastal lifestyle. One of Hodnett Cooper’s very own, Lisa Wilson was the Real Estate agent featured on the show to help the lovely couple find their perfect island home. In addition, St. Marys, just a few miles away was also the 2004 HGTV Dream Home. This year, in the heart of the island at Sea Palms subdivision sits the 3,600 square foot Dream Home. The home was originally built in the 1980’s but was completely remolded and turned into a modern day fairy tale. In addition to the lucky winner receiving the beautiful home they also win a Honda Pilot and $250,000 in cash, not bad right?! In previous years they have opened the Dream Homes for public tours and we are keeping our fingers crossed they will do the same this year! The contest starts December 28th and ends February 17th. You can vote twice a day every day, in years past there has never been a winner who did not vote twice a day every day… so make sure you enter daily!!! This year’s Ryder Cup is taking place in Hazeltine, Missouri featuring St. Simons Island native Davis Love III. Davis, who is no stranger to the Ryder Cup has played in 6 tournaments as well as been an assistant captain in 2010. He has had 20 PGA career victories and 13 international. Impressive credentials, which I’m sure had a little to do with the reasoning behind his selection as captain! The US has lost eight of the past ten Ryder Cups but PGA of America President, Derek Sprague is confident in Love’s ability to lead to team to victory. He says Love is adavis love “great leader” and “good consensus builder” who can bring together everyone on the team. Tom Lehman, Vice-Captain of this year’s Ryder Cup says “The thing Davis has going for him is he has done it before, I think he understands a lot better the way guys think and the kind of communication they need. I’m sure he’ll be better than he was the first time, and I thought he was pretty good the first time.”

Currently (9/30/2016 at 2:30pm) United States are leading by 4 points with a score of 4-0. The rules of this particular golf game are much different than tradition golf which is stroke play, however for the Ryder Cup competition consist of four-ball and foursome matches. The way this tournament is scored is whoever gets to 14 ½ points first wins. If it ends on a draw, then the previous year’s winner takes the trophy.

You can see Davis Love and team in action this weekend with full coverage of the Ryder Cup on CBS Sports.
