4 Tips To Help You Get Organized In 2017

Getting Organized in 2017

It’s hard to believe it’s already 2017!
Need some help with those New Year’s Resolutions to become organized?  Are you thinking about listing your house this year, but you just can’t seem to tackle the list of to-dos around the home?  Leaky faucets?  Need to pressure wash the driveway?

Houselogic recently shared a few ideas that are key to becoming a little bit more organized around the house.  If you follow their full list, they guarantee that you can organize your home by February 1st in less than an hour a day!  Here are a few takeaways from this article that Hodnett Cooper believes will help you get your home list-ready in 2017!

Do that Project2017-beach

“What about your space is making you feel uncomfortable or overwhelmed?” asks Amy Trager, a professional organizer in Chicago. Is it the paperwork disaster in your office? The pile of clothes teetering on your dresser? Or that mess that surrounds your doorway? Start with what’s annoying you, she says. One hour on that task will get your organizing engine revving.

Reassess Your Display Shelves

Shelves crammed with knickknacks, books you’ll never read, and stuff you somehow accumulated are just a waste of space. Donate books to the library, discard the junk, and arrange what’s left in a way that pleases you

Declutter Your Desk

When your workspace is swimming with collectibles, staplers, Post-its, and more, paring down can keep you focused when it’s time to hunker down

Hang a Shelf

Wall storage is so often overlooked. Find a spot in your home where a shelf would solve a problem, and hang it. Maybe it’s for some toiletries in the bathroom, or laundry supplies, or for your kid’s stuffed toys.

In addition to the above ideas, Hodnett Cooper has a full market preparation guide that our licensed REALTORS are happy to discuss with you.  From enhancing your curb appeal to creating a “model home” interior, our real estate professionals can help you help your home make a great first impression to potential buyers.

Good luck with those New Year’s Resolutions to get organized in 2017!  And, if a Hodnett Cooper agent can offer advice on getting your home list-ready, just let us know!

Christmas Tradition On St. Simons Island Lives On!

Each year with the help of Glynn County Fire department and the St. Simons Island Civinettes, Santa visits the island in his antique red firetruck. HGTV Dream Home 2017 on St. Simons Island

Have you heard? HGTV 2017 Dream Home is on St. Simons Island! HGTV is no stranger to St. Simons featuring our small but beautiful island on many of their shows throughout the years. St Simons was featured on Island Life, where a couple and their children from California move across country for a slow paced, more relaxed coastal lifestyle. One of Hodnett Cooper’s very own, Lisa Wilson was the Real Estate agent featured on the show to help the lovely couple find their perfect island home. In addition, St. Marys, just a few miles away was also the 2004 HGTV Dream Home. This year, in the heart of the island at Sea Palms subdivision sits the 3,600 square foot Dream Home. The home was originally built in the 1980’s but was completely remolded and turned into a modern day fairy tale. In addition to the lucky winner receiving the beautiful home they also win a Honda Pilot and $250,000 in cash, not bad right?! In previous years they have opened the Dream Homes for public tours and we are keeping our fingers crossed they will do the same this year! The contest starts December 28th and ends February 17th. You can vote twice a day every day, in years past there has never been a winner who did not vote twice a day every day… so make sure you enter daily!!! The winner of the contest will be announced in late February or early March.

The goal of this foundation is to contribute to the well being of the nation and the community by supporting programs that focus on building better and brighter futures for children and their families. The headquarters is located on St. Simons Island which is where Davis Love III calls home and also why the tournament is held in the Golden Isles. According to the RSM website the mission of the Davis Love Foundation is to “help build a better future for children and their families who are at risk of poor educational, economic, social and health outcomes. The Foundation provides grants and donations to community-based programs that focus on children and families in need.”

The current title sponsor is contracted with RSM, the nation’s leading provider of assurance, tax and consulting services focused on the middle market, through 2020. After five years, The RSM Classic has raised more than $4.8 million to support charities focused on children and families in need.  The funds benefit many organizations including Special Olympics (National, State and Local) and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Southeast Georgia.

St. Simons Island Secrets Revealed

The beach may be what brings you to St. Simons Island, and the miles of bike paths will keep you entertained while you are here. Of course there are lots of shops, and some fantastic restaurants too. This article from 365 Atlanta Family is a great resource on where to eat and what to do on St. Simons Island; but what are the secrets unique to our island? Here are three of our favorites.

Look for Tree Spirits: Hidden among housing developments, outside restaurants and other establishments are the tree spirits. Carved into the trunks of old trees, these works of art are fun to find. It’s like a scavenger hunt through town. Each tree spirit is a little different and you can find them all over the island. Visit any of the Golden Isles Welcome Centers for a list of locations.St. Simons Island Fort Fredrica

Visit Fort Frederica: St. Simons wasn’t always a vacation destination. In Colonial times, there was an English settlement on the island that pre-dates the American Revolution by forty years. Fort Frederica was set up to guard the coast from the Spanish. It was the Battle of Bloody Marsh, also on St. Simons that secured the land as an English colony instead of a Spanish one. Fort Frederica has a small, but very engaging museum and a fantastic Junior Ranger program where kids borrow a haversack with a spyglass and compass to complete their mission.

Say Hello to Mr. Bird: He’s been written about in the New York Times, and countless other publications. He’s an African Grey parrot that lives at the St. Simons Bait & Tackle shop on Mallory Street just off the pier. If he’s in a good mood that day, he might let you put him on your shoulder, if not, it’s best to just admire him up on his perch.

Sweet Endings: To round out your St. Simons Island adventure, visit Sweet Mamas in Retreat Village for a delicious peanut butter cookie with chocolate icing.

Fort Frederica Expasion

St. Simons Island’s Fort Frederica has been approved by the U.S. House for an expansion taking the monument from 250 acres to 305. Original plans called for an expansion from 250 acres to 525 acres, however nearby land owners were concerned. Thus the House committee reduced the acreage to a total of 305. St. Simons Land and Trust will donate 21 acres to Fort Frederica, if the expansion is accepted by the Senate. The National Park service wants to expand the site to include a campground as well as a cannon battery. Both will preserve the colonial era aspect of the grounds. No entry charges will still remain as is, federal workers who are working on this project say it would cost more to collect the fee than it would raise revenue. Steve Theus, site manager for Fort Frederica boasts that once the legislation is signed into law there will be a much more complete story that will be able to be told about the town of Frederica.

Rio 2016 Olympic Athletes from Georgia

Georgia is home to quite a few Olympic athletes, read below to find out who!

Georgia is putting up some serious numbers in the Olympic medal count! To date they have eight Olympic medals. That’s more than most of the countries have. Three of these medals are Gold as well adding to the already impressive accomplishment. Most of these medals have come from University of Georgia’s swimming program. Bragging rights are now help in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay in which Gunnar Bentz won a Gold, 2 women, Allison Schmitt and Melanie Margalis helped the Team USA win a Gold in the same Freestyle relay as Bentz. We also have Chase Kalisz who won an individual Silver medal in the 400 individual medley. Along with another medal from Schmitt and Amanda Weir who helped Team USA win silver in the 4×100 freestyle relay.

Aside from swimming we have Maya Moore who will be defending the women’s basketball 2012 Gold. As well as Kristi Castlin who will be competing in her first Olympics, representing Team USA in the women’s 100m hurdles.

It’s safe to say Georgia produces some major athletes. We are so proud of each one of them and can’t wait to cheer Team USA and all of our Georgia athletes on during the Rio 2016 Olympics

GO TEAM USA!!!

In Celebration of Memorial Day

When reflecting on the lives lost of all those who served our country we often think of the red poppy flower but some may not know the history behind it. Moina Michael, a notable professor in her time had a passion for remembering those who died in service. In response to a popular poem at the time “In Flander’s Fields” which spoke about the red poppy flowers which grew near the battlefields where fighting took place, Moina Michael vowed to always wear a remembrance poppy. She wanted the red poppy to become a national symbol of remembrance and made it her mission to see this through. She decided she would begin to sell her silk poppy lapel pin to raise money for the rehabilitation of war veterans. By the time of her death Moina Micahel raised over $200 million and was honored by the American Legion at the highest award.

On St. Simons Island we are honoring the lives lost with the Rotary Club of St Simons’ 26th Annual Taps at Twilight. The event will take place Monday, May 30th at 6:45 pm at the Neptune Park Bandstand. We will be honoring those who haven fallen in service of our country as well as those who are serving bravely today. General James Livingston, a Georgia native who was awarded the United States’ highest military decoration – the Congressional Medal of Honor – for his heroic actions in 1968 during the Vietnam War, will deliver the Memorial Day address. During this remembrance ceremony you will experience pageantry of flags, patriotic music, posting and retiring of the colors, and “Taps” played by dueling trumpets. The Rotary Club of St. Simons is extended this event to everyone free of charge as a gift to the community. All you need to bring is your chair!

Hodnett Cooper would like to thank all the men and women who have laid down their life for our country and its people. Our simple appreciation will never be enough to compensate for the lives lost and the families left behind. We are forever grateful to thee! We hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend.
