Fall Fun in the Golden Isles
Fall is the perfect time of year in the Golden Isles! The days are still warm enough to enjoy the beautiful beaches and lay by the pool. The nights start to cool off a bit so you can enjoy walking to dinner or opting for dinner on the patio instead of inside. There is never a lack of great family friendly activities on St. Simons and the surrounding areas, but this time of year the outdoor activities are endless! Check out a few of our suggestions on what to do in the next few weeks. Click here to see a full list of activities happening this month!

Celebrate Labor Day surrounded by friends, family, good food and good fun! Hodnett Cooper Vacation Rentals is looking forward to hosting several guests for the long weekend in honor of Labor Day next week. We invite you to share in the fun with us by testing out some ideas to make your Labor Day BBQ a huge hit!
Hodnett Cooper would love to host you, your friends and family at the Beach Club, which offers a pool, ocean front views, and grills! Grill it up for Labor Day poolside with Hodnett Cooper! If you are local to the Golden Isles, and just need a grill to enhance your Labor Day experience, check out Massengale Park which offers public grills, beach access and a playground for the little ones.
If you are having a cookout or BBQ of any kind on the island, Southern Soul BBQ can make your cookout an event to remember! Their pulled pork and side dishes are exactly what you would expect from bbq in the south…. mouth-wateringly delicious and as good as grandma used to make! Southern Soul has been featured many times on many television shows for their delicious food; I also can attest to how delicious everything is there! You can call your order in and pick it up on the way, where ever you may be headed.
If you would rather make a dish yourself, I would highly recommend Serious Eats, Grilled Oysters Recipe.
- 1 dozen oysters
- 4 to 5 ounces compound butter, such as garlic-parsley butter, kimchi butter, or Parmesan-basil butter
- Seaweed or kosher salt, for serving
Line a rimmed baking sheet with heavy-duty aluminum foil, crinkling it up to create deep creases. Shuck oysters, discard top shells, and place them on foil-lined baking sheet, using foil to keep them upright so that juices do not spill out.
Light one chimney full of charcoal. When all charcoal is lit and covered with gray ash, pour out and arrange coals on one side of charcoal grate. Set cooking grate in place, cover grill, and allow to preheat for 5 minutes. Alternatively, set half the burners on a gas grill to the highest heat setting, cover, and preheat for 10 minutes. Clean and oil grilling grate.
Place oysters directly over hot side of grill. Using 2 spoons, place 2 teaspoons (10ml) of compound butter inside each. Cover and cook until butter is melted and liquid is bubbling, about 2 minutes. Transfer to a serving platter lined with seaweed or moistened kosher salt (to keep oysters level; see note above) and serve immediately.
As the GoldenIsles News reports,
The name Hodnett Cooper Real Estate has long been a mainstay in the Golden Isles real estate market. But in the spring that will change.
The company will join Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices, part of the HSF Affiliates LLC family of real estate brokerage franchise networks. In the spring, the company will officially begin operating as Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Hodnett Cooper Real Estate.
The family-owned brokerage, led by broker/owner Pat Hodnett Cooper, the daughter of its founder, operates three offices with more than 50 agents. Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is America’s fastest-growing real estate brokerage network with more than 42,350 agents and 1,270 offices admitted to the brand since its founding in September 2013.
When presented with the opportunity to join the firm, Hodnett Cooper said she jumped at the chance.
“Very few times in your life do opportunities present themselves that are life changing; this is certainly one of those times,” she said.
“I am so excited for the future of our real estate company and for what our franchise affiliation with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices will mean for our business.”
She feels that aligning the real estate brokerage with a large and recognizable firm like Berkshire Hathaway Inc. will bring good things in the years ahead.
“The name will resonate well with clients in all market segments and with real estate professionals in our area; we’re proud to represent this terrific brand and look forward to growing with the very best,” she said.
With their transition, Hodnett Cooper Real Estate agents will gain access to Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices’ Global Network Platform, a powerful tool suite focusing on lead generation, marketing support, social media, video production/distribution and more. The brand also provides national and international marketing support, listing syndication to consumer search sites in 35 countries, professional education and the exclusive Luxury Collection for high-end and resort listings.
Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices CEO Gino Blefari is also optimistic about the move.
“Pat is a well-respected leader throughout the St. Simons Island and Golden Isles marketplace,” he said. “We are thrilled to welcome them to the Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices family.”
The company’s new Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices yard signs are expected to populate the Golden Isles this spring. Hodnett Cooper Vacation Rentals, Inc., however, will continue operations as the largest vacation rental company on St. Simons Island and will not be part of the franchise affiliation.

Breakfast on St. Simons Island
You aren’t officially a St. Simons Islander until you’ve visited these 3 breakfast spots on the island! If you’ve ever come to St. Simons and asked a local where you should go for some good southern cuisine they will undoubtedly tell you these three spots. From local diners to a breakfast buffet there is something on the island for everyone. These are our top picks for favorite local spots on St. Simons Island!
Café Frederica, established in 1987 located on the North end of the island where their motto is, “Good Food, Good Friends.” Known for its diner like atmosphere, they definitely live up to their motto where everyone is welcome and everyone is family often times you will notice that employees know many of their patrons by name. You can get anything from omelets, roast beef hash to BLTs to club sandwiches and everything in-between.
Sweet Mamas, has been on the island for over 20 years and is loved for its quality breakfast sandwiches and bakery. Located inside the Winn Dixie shopping center it’s centrally located on the island making it a business hot spot for locals and visitors alike. Stop here for their famous pork pops!
Sandcastle, has been in business for over 25 years and is a local favorite! They are most well known for their delicious breakfast buffet. Located in the Pier Village, it’s fun to walk the beach from the Beach Club, The St. Simons Grand, or any oceanfront property you might be staying at to have a great breakfast.
Have you heard? HGTV 2017 Dream Home is on St. Simons Island! HGTV is no stranger to St. Simons featuring our small but beautiful island on many of their shows throughout the years. St Simons was featured on Island Life, where a couple and their children from California move across country for a slow paced, more relaxed coastal lifestyle. One of Hodnett Cooper’s very own, Lisa Wilson was the Real Estate agent featured on the show to help the lovely couple find their perfect island home. In addition, St. Marys, just a few miles away was also the 2004 HGTV Dream Home. This year, in the heart of the island at Sea Palms subdivision sits the 3,600 square foot Dream Home. The home was originally built in the 1980’s but was completely remolded and turned into a modern day fairy tale. In addition to the lucky winner receiving the beautiful home they also win a Honda Pilot and $250,000 in cash, not bad right?! In previous years they have opened the Dream Homes for public tours and we are keeping our fingers crossed they will do the same this year! The contest starts December 28th and ends February 17th. You can vote twice a day every day, in years past there has never been a winner who did not vote twice a day every day… so make sure you enter daily!!! The winner of the contest will be announced in late February or early March.
