HGTV Dream Home 2017 on St. Simons Island

Have you heard? HGTV 2017 Dream Home is on St. Simons Island! HGTV is no stranger to St. Simons featuring our small but beautiful island on many of their shows throughout the years. St Simons was featured on Island Life, where a couple and their children from California move across country for a slow paced, more relaxed coastal lifestyle. One of Hodnett Cooper’s very own, Lisa Wilson was the Real Estate agent featured on the show to help the lovely couple find their perfect island home. In addition, St. Marys, just a few miles away was also the 2004 HGTV Dream Home. This year, in the heart of the island at Sea Palms subdivision sits the 3,600 square foot Dream Home. The home was originally built in the 1980’s but was completely remolded and turned into a modern day fairy tale. In addition to the lucky winner receiving the beautiful home they also win a Honda Pilot and $250,000 in cash, not bad right?! In previous years they have opened the Dream Homes for public tours and we are keeping our fingers crossed they will do the same this year! The contest starts December 28th and ends February 17th. You can vote twice a day every day, in years past there has never been a winner who did not vote twice a day every day… so make sure you enter daily!!! The winner of the contest will be announced in late February or early March.

Labor Day on St. Simons Island

pool with grills

The Beach Club Pool Side

Celebrate Labor Day surrounded by friends, family, good food and good fun!  Hodnett Cooper Vacation Rentals is looking forward to hosting several guests for the long weekend in honor of Labor Day next week.  We invite you to share in the fun with us by testing out some ideas to make your Labor Day BBQ a huge hit!

Hodnett Cooper would love to host you, your friends and family at the Beach Club, which offers a pool, ocean front views, and grills! Grill it up for Labor Day poolside with Hodnett Cooper!  If you are local to the Golden Isles, and just need a grill to enhance your Labor Day experience, check out Massengale Park which offers public grills, beach access and a playground for the little ones.

If you are having a cookout or BBQ of any kind on the island, Southern Soul BBQ can make your cookout an event to remember!  Their pulled pork and side dishes are exactly what you would expect from bbq in the south…. mouth-wateringly delicious and as good as grandma used to make!  Southern Soul has been featured many times on many television shows for their delicious food; I also can attest to how delicious everything is there! You can call your order in and pick it up on the way, where ever you may be headed.

If you would rather make a dish yourself, I would highly recommend Food Network Kitchen’s 7-Layer Pasta Salad

7-Layer Pasta Salad

Ingredients
Kosher salt
8 ounces farfalle (about 4 cups)
2 stalks broccoli, cut into florets
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup buttermilk
1/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
Juice of 1 lime
Freshly ground pepper
2 avocados, diced
1 12 -ounce piece deli ham, diced (about 2 cups)
8 ounces yellow cheddar cheese, shredded
1 small head romaine lettuce, sliced
2 tomatoes, diced

Directions

Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook until al dente (about 2 minutes less than the label directs), adding the broccoli during the last 4 minutes of cooking. Drain the pasta and broccoli and rinse under cool water; shake off the excess. Remove the broccoli and pat dry.
Whisk the mayonnaise, buttermilk, 1/4 cup chives, the parsley, half of the lime juice, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and pepper to taste. Toss the pasta and a few tablespoons of the dressing in a medium bowl.
Assemble the salad: Toss the avocados with the remaining lime juice in a large glass serving bowl and season with salt; arrange in an even layer. Top with layers of the ham, broccoli, pasta, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. Drizzle some of the remaining dressing on top and sprinkle with the remaining 1 tablespoon chives, or cover and refrigerate the salad and dressing separately up to 6 hours. (Bring to room temperature before serving.)

Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend!  Let us know if Hodnett Cooper Vacation Rentals can assist with planning a fun Labor Day getaway!

Ernie Andrus Finishes Run Across USA in St. Simons Island

Ernie Andrus will finish his run, Saturday 8.20.16 at the Coast Guard Station on St. Simons Island

Does the name Ernie Andrus ring a bell? If not, it will after this weekend. 93 year old (as of Friday August 19th 2016) Ernie Andrus will be finishing a trek across the United States in St. Simons this weekend! He began this journey October 7th of 2013 in San Diego, California. Ernie is a World War II veteran who helped bring the, now, only remaining LST 325 navy ship back to the US from Crete, Greece. The ship has already been restored and is still operational however there were plans to return the ship Normandy for the D-Day Memorial Service, the same place it was 70 years ago. Cost to get it across the Atlantic Ocean are enormous and due to lack of finances the trip was cancelled. Ernie’s run across the United States will hopefully raise excitement about the LST 325 navy ship and help secure enough money to bring the ship back to Normandy.

As of July 10th he has run 2,534 miles in 957 hours. He will complete his race at the Coast Guard Station Saturday morning. I can’t wait to see history be made Saturday morning and hope to see the community out supporting Ernie! If you would like to donate to the LST 325 trip across the Atlantic, click here.

Way to go Ernie and Happy 93rd birthday!

Ernie Andrus

Movies Filmed in the Golden Isles

The Golden Isles offers some of the most beautiful back drops on the coast with the endless marsh, sunrises over the ocean, and majestic live oak trees. Making this the perfect place for filming movies and television shows. Locals typically hear the buzz around shows being filmed and the list of celebrities that make their way to the area to film but most travelers probably don’t know of all the famous footsteps that have happened here!

Most recently a new film called Live By Night featuring Ben Affleck was filmed in the heart of Brunswick, GA. The film will be released in 2017 and is based on the 2012 novel Live By Night by Dennis Lehane. The south of Brunswick got a huge make over (or make under) to have the appearance of Ybor City, FL in the 1920’s. A lot of money and time was spent painting, recreating buildings and signs, redoing roads, as well as on building and then burning down other set pieces. Big crowds turned out several nights to try to catch a glimpse of Ben Affleck and he was nice enough to acknowledge the crowds and give them a waive.

Prior to Live By Night, another very well-known movie filmed partly in the Golden Isles was Magic Mike XXL, starring Channing Tatum. With the majority of the scenes taking place in Tybee Island and Savannah you might recognize the beach scenes due to our popular and notable drift wood washing ashore on the beaches here. Although not one of the classiest movies ever filmed Magic Mike XXL is surely a favorite among women, leaving them blushing and giggling for sure!

One of the most famous movies to be filmed in the Golden Isles is definitely X-Men First Class. Although most of the film took place in the UK, there was a beach scene filmed in our back yard, Jekyll Island at the Jekyll Island Club.  Also filmed at the Jekyll Island Club was Glory starring Denzel Washington and Matthew Broderick.

It’s safe to say celebrities from far and wide have walked the Golden Isles, which gives a small but beautiful area large bragging rights for sure!
