Start your day at Sandy Bottom Bagels, a local favorite known for hearty breakfasts and quick bites. From bagels stacked with eggs and hash browns to lighter options like parfaits and fruit bowls, there’s something for everyone. Just want coffee? They’ve got that too. If you’re beach-bound later, grab a lunch sandwich to go.
Afterward, stretch your legs at Gascoigne Bluff Park, a 24-acre waterfront park shaded by live oaks. Pack a picnic, hike the trails, enjoy views of the Frederica River, or try fishing, disc golf, or simply relaxing under the trees.
Browse the Shops and Hit a Museum
Nearby Redfern Village offers island-inspired home décor, clothing, and jewelry. When you’re ready for a change of pace, visit the World War II Homefront Museum, housed in a historic Coast Guard Station and filled with fascinating exhibits about coastal Georgia during the war.

Explore a Museum, Stroll the Pier, or Bike the Island

Your St. Simons Winter Itinerary
Start with Coffee and a Beach Walk
Nothing’s better than a good cup of coffee on a winter morning, and we absolutely love the flavor of the fresh roasted beans at Wake Up Coffee Company. Grab a hot latte, cappuccino, or one of their seasonal specials, and maybe even a pastry to go! Then enjoy your coffee on a peaceful stroll along East Beach: refreshing winter air, gentle waves, and a warm cup in hand. There’s no better way to start your St. Simons morning.
Grab a Hearty Breakfast and Swing by the Pier
After your morning beach walk, we like a breakfast that will fuel any Golden Isles adventures! Palmer’s Village Cafe is one of our favorites, and you’ll soon discover why. Whether you opt for the maple glaze and bacon French toast or the huevos rancheros, it’s a meal worth savoring, and one you’ll want to put on repeat every morning of your trip! Afterward, take a stroll to the St. Simons Island Pier to watch the waves, catch local anglers at work, and take a few selfies!
Browse the Shops and Hit a Regional Event
After a morning stroll along the pier, we love checking out what’s new at the shops in Pier Village, just a stroll away. It’s a great mix of charming boutiques and local artisans offering everything from jewelry and clothing to coastal decor and unique gifts.
And one of our absolute favorite things about winter in St. Simons is all the fun events. Here are a few of our favorites happening throughout the season:
- Island Treasures Treasure Hunt
- Brunswick Rockin’s Stewbilee
- St. Simons Land Trust Oyster Roast
- Southeast Georgia Health System Bridge Run
- Crafts in the Village
Enjoy a Sweet Treat and a Friendly St. Simons Welcome
No winter getaway to St. Simons would be complete without a trip to Frosty’s Griddle & Shake. It’s a local favorite, and for good reason! We love grabbing a creamy milkshake or sweet treat to enjoy while soaking in the island vibe, then swing by the Golden Isles Welcome Center. It’s a great place to pick up maps, local event info, and a few insider tips from their friendly staff.
Swing by a Museum or Two Before Dinner
Walk to the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum, a place we revisit time and again. Climb the lighthouse for incredible views of the Georgia coastline, stroll through the museum to learn about its history, and don’t miss the charming keeper’s cottage. Afterward, take the five-minute drive to the World War II Homefront Museum. It’s small but fascinating, offering interactive activities and interesting displays about the area and its role during the war.
Savor a Delicious Dinner and a Sunset
One of our favorite ways to end the day is with dinner at Brogen’s North. Whether we’re craving fresh seafood, a juicy burger, or one of their specialty pizzas, it’s the kind of meal that hits the spot every time. After dinner, don’t miss the sunset — they’re spectacular this time of year. Catch it on the beach, at your vacation rental, or on your way back as the sky turns shades of crimson over the water.

If you’ve spent time on St. Simons during the summer, you already know what’s in store. Beautiful beaches, friendly locals, and a laid-back atmosphere are definitely par for the course. But if you’ve never visited in the fall, you’re in for a different kind of getaway. With fewer crowds, cooler breezes, and plenty of sunshine, fall break is one of the best times to visit the Golden Isles.
If you’re coming for a long weekend, you’ll have plenty of time to soak in the best of the island. Stretching your stay into a whole week? Even better! Particularly since we’ve put together an itinerary that covers all the highlights. From beach time and bike rides to shrimp baskets and game-day fun, your St. Simons fall break is about to become a favorite family tradition!
Day One – Settle in and Soak Up the Views
No need to rush, you’re on beach time now, so take it slow and ease into your stay! Walk through your vacation rental and get familiar with your home base for the next few days. Unpack if you’d like, or just drop your bags and head straight to the porch to take in the view and enjoy a glass of wine before dinner!
Casual Dinner
Since it’s your first night in town, go casual with dinner—fresh seafood on a patio or maybe some Southern barbecue. Try Iguana’s Seafood Restaurant for shrimp, crab cakes, snow crab legs, and more! Porch is another great option, serving fire-roasted chicken, catfish, and street tacos. You won’t go wrong with either one!
Sunset Walk
Hit East Beach for a post-dinner stroll and walk off that delicious meal with your toes in the sand as the sky puts on an incredible show.
Day Two – Family Adventures & Game Day Vibes
Kick off the day with a hearty breakfast and a flexible plan that leaves room for outdoor fun, good food, and plenty of time to catch the big game.
Breakfast and a Few Attractions
Fuel up with a steaming cup of Joe alongside delicious crepes and pancakes or mouthwatering biscuits and gravy at Mallery Street Cafe. Trust us, you won’t leave hungry!
Spend the rest of the morning enjoying the weather and sightseeing! The kids will love climbing to the top of the Lighthouse Museum and seeing what the fishermen are catching along St. Simons Island Pier. If they’ve still got some energy to burn, swing by Neptune Park and let them play on the playground, then challenge them to a game of Mini Golf!
Lunch and College Football
After a morning out and about, why not grab lunch at a local spot where you can catch the game! Georgia fans will feel right at home just about anywhere—many restaurants around the island will have a game on, especially during college football season. Head to Brogen’s South for burgers, wings, and TVs both indoors and out, or try Gnat’s Landing for a casual vibe, cold drinks, and plenty of UGA spirit.
Not into football? No worries! Lunch on an outdoor patio with fresh seafood and a cool breeze still sounds like a win!
Dolphin Tour, Dinner, and a Movie
Now it’s time for one of the island’s most popular experiences—a dolphin tour! Local companies offer cruises at all hours, and you’re pretty much guaranteed to see playful dolphins swimming alongside the boat! It’s a fun way to explore the areas around the island and maybe catch a glimpse of other local wildlife, like sea turtles.
We’re all for keeping dinner easy and delicious, so we suggest takeout from Southern Soul BBQ. We can attest that their pulled pork, ribs, and mac and cheese are always a hit. Then head back to your vacation rental, slip into something comfy, and let the kids pick a movie. Pop some popcorn, put your feet up, and enjoy a cozy night in—you’ve earned it!
Day Three – Explore the Island
Fall on St. Simons Island is best enjoyed outdoors, and we have a few ideas to help you make the most of every sun-soaked moment!
Rent Bikes and See the Sights
One of the best ways to experience St. Simons in the fall is on two wheels. You can rent bikes from Ocean Motion and cruise along scenic paths, past historic sites, and charming neighborhoods.
Picnic Lunch at the Beach
Swing by Three Little Birds and grab some chicken salad croissants, cheese steaks, or fried chicken sandwiches to go. Next stop? The beach! Enjoy your tasty treats and soak up the sun for a few hours before heading back to the vacation rental to clean up for dinner.
Dinner and a Sunset Stroll
Treat the family to an upscale dining experience at Georgia Sea Grill, where the menu features elevated dishes made with fresh, seasonal ingredients. From beautifully prepared seafood and savory steaks to delicious small plates ideal for sharing, it’s the kind of meal that turns a good day into an unforgettable one. After dinner, stroll along the beach for yet another gorgeous fall sunset!
Day Four – Brunch & Shopping
Spend the morning at Pier Village, a local hotspot with popular eateries and boutiques! (You’ll also find plenty of places to enjoy a sweet treat). Start with brunch at Palmer’s Café, renowned for creative takes on breakfast classics, like cinnamon roll pancakes and shrimp scrambles. Strong coffee served with a smile is an added bonus!

St. Simons Island offers so many family-friendly activities that it can be hard to know where to start. That’s why we’ve highlighted eight must-try experiences for kids visiting this summer that showcase the best of what makes St. Simons special – from beautiful beaches to historic sites and local treats.
Here’s what makes each of these bucket list activities worth checking off during your island visit. (You can grab a copy of our printable bucket list coloring page at the end of this post, or find it included in our guest welcome packet!)
Climb to the Top of the St. Simons Lighthouse
Try counting all 129 steps as you climb the St. Simons Lighthouse, built in 1872. This 104-foot lighthouse gives you great views of the coast from the top.
Kids love hearing ghost stories about Frederick Osborne, a former lighthouse keeper. The museum in the keeper’s house has exhibits about boats, lighthouses, and local history that kids can touch and explore.
Location: 101 12th Street, St. Simons Island Hours and Costs: Check the Coastal Georgia Historical Society website
Hunt for the Mermaid Tree Spirit
One of St. Simons Island’s most magical attractions is its collection of tree spirits – intricate faces carved into live oak trees throughout the island. The Mermaid Tree Spirit is especially enchanting for children to discover!
Tip: The Golden Isles Welcome Center has maps to help you locate the many different tree spirits and you might find that the mermaid is right around the corner!
Ride Through Town on the St. Simons Trolley
For a fun way to see the island, catch Anchor Trolleys’ colorful open-air trolley. Kids love the wind-in-your-hair experience as the trolley loops around the south end of St. Simons!
Starting from the historic Pier Village, the trolley makes stops at popular spots like Arnold Road (near King & Prince Hotel), Massengale Park (beach access), Coast Guard Station (East Beach), Southern Soul BBQ, Red Fern Village (shops and restaurants), and Retreat Village. Drivers share fun island stories along the way.
Departures: Regular loops from Pier Village Tickets: Available from the driver or online
Get Ice Cream from Frosty’s
Cool off at Frosty’s Griddle & Shake on Mallery Street, created by the team behind the popular Southern Soul Barbeque. This local favorite serves soft-serve cones, floats, milkshakes, and their signature “Hurricane” (their own take on a blended ice cream treat).
Beyond ice cream, they also serve tasty smashed cheeseburgers, chili dogs, and shrimp baskets if you’re hungry for a meal.
Location: 501 Mallery St, St. Simons Island Hours: 11am to 8pm daily (closed Mondays)
Build a Sandcastle
St. Simons beaches offer the perfect sand consistency for impressive sandcastle creations! Don’t underestimate this classic beach activity—when the whole family gets involved, the laughs and teamwork become the highlight of the day. The gentle slope and wide shoreline at East Beach make it an ideal spot for family sandcastle projects, with convenient facilities nearby.
Tip: Visit during low tide for the best sandcastle-building conditions. The sand is more compact and easier to work with, and you’ll have more beach space to create your masterpiece!
Collect Seashells
St. Simons beaches offer a casual treasure hunt for shell collectors, especially after storms or during low tide. East Beach and the stretch from Coast Guard Beach to East Beach tend to have the best finds. Make a game out of finding different shapes and colors with your kids!
Tip: Always check shells to make sure they’re not occupied! Hermit crabs and other small creatures often make their homes in empty shells. If it’s occupied, gently place it back where you found it.
Best Time: 1-2 hours before or after low tide or after storms
Fish or Crab from the St. Simons Pier
Kids love watching the action at the St. Simons Pier, one of only three ocean piers on the Georgia coast. Try your hand at fishing or net crabbing, or simply stroll the length of the pier to enjoy views of Jekyll Island to the south.
If you want to fish or crab, the pier has convenient tray tables and water hoses along the railings for preparing bait and cleaning catches. Younger kids especially enjoy dropping crab nets with bait and checking what they’ve caught.
Not interested in fishing? The benches along each side of the pier offer great spots to sit and watch local fishermen and crabbers in action. It’s a relaxing way to spend an hour, especially at sunset!
Visit the Sea Turtles on Jekyll
Just a short drive from St. Simons is the Georgia Sea Turtle Center on Jekyll Island. This is Georgia’s only sea turtle hospital, where kids can see real turtle patients in the rehabilitation pavilion. The center features hands-on, interactive exhibits where children learn about sea turtle life cycles and conservation through touch displays and games.
Looking for even more turtle adventures? Check out their summer programs! Join Night Patrol or Dawn Patrol to ride with researchers searching for nesting turtles, or try a Turtle Walk to look for tracks on the beach. With luck, you might spot wild sea turtles!
Hours: Open daily from 9am to 5pm Summer Programs: Visit their website for more information

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and whether you’re a master planner or a spur-of-the-moment kind of family, we’ve got your back with stellar recommendations for a vacation that’ll make dad feel like the MVP he truly is.
Not sure where to start? We know every dad is different, so we’ve put together some ideas for where to stay and what to do based on what your dad loves most!
The Chief Fun Officer Dad
He’s the director of summer fun, orchestrating the perfect blend of beach days, pool time, and outdoor gatherings. This dad knows exactly when to suggest a sunset beach walk and when to fire up the grill for dinner on the patio. These Summer Favorites each offer something special—whether it’s a private pool, multiple outdoor seating areas for his morning coffee ritual, or the perfect location just steps from the beach!
This dad is always on the lookout for unique family adventures, like the Lady Jane Shrimpin’ Excursion, where everyone can explore coastal marshes and handle fascinating sea creatures while learning from the onboard marine naturalist!
The Ad-venture Capitalist Dad
He’s the master of the impromptu getaway, turning random free days into beach adventures! This dad has the family beach bag perpetually packed in the closet. The Sea Gate’s unique one-night minimum stay option is his secret weapon, allowing him to transform an ordinary weekend into valuable family beach time just steps from the sand!
Mini golf at Neptune Park is his go-to vacation move—the perfect spontaneous activity that doesn’t require advance reservations but guarantees competitive family fun. One minute you’re walking through the village, the next you’re watching him line up a putt like it’s the Masters final round.
The Lifeguard of the Party Dad
He’s the unofficial welcome committee at the pool, knowing everyone’s names by lunchtime. This dad has a knack for striking up conversations with neighboring chairs and turning strangers into vacation friends before the first application of sunscreen wears off. The Beach Club’s spacious oceanfront pool area is his natural habitat, where he alternates between refreshing dips and his hourly “who wants to take a beach walk?” announcements.

A long weekend on St. Simons Island might not seem like enough time to take it all in, but it’s surprising how effortless exploring can be. With its walkable and bike-friendly layout, many must-see spots are just minutes apart, making it easy to experience more than you might expect each day without feeling rushed. From sunrise strolls along the Atlantic Ocean to unforgettable meals and exploring historic sights, this three-day weekend itinerary lets you soak up the best of this sun-kissed coastal island at your own pace!
Day One – Ease into the Weekend
Hit the Visitor’s Center
The Golden Isles Welcome Center might not be at the top of your ‘things to do in St. Simons list,’ but trust us, you’ll want to make this stop. The folks here are eager to help and want you to make the most of your stay in the Golden Isles, and you’ll feel much more comfortable exploring after chatting with the friendly staff. They have dozens of brochures, tour information, and even a souvenir area—it’s the perfect way to kickstart your weekend in the St. Simons community.
Walk Along St. Simons Island Pier
Just a short stroll away, the St. Simons Island Pier offers the perfect chance to settle into island life. Enjoy the ocean breezes as you stroll hand in hand, watching the fishermen reel in their catch while taking in the stunning coastal scenery.
Head to the Beach
With dozens of beach access points, you’ll have no problem finding your way to the sand. Enjoy a long stroll with your significant other, relax in the sun, reconnect, and try not to doze off and miss the glorious weather!
Enjoy a Relaxing Dinner
A quiet dinner might be in order since it’s your first night in town. At Dorothy’s Cocktail & Oyster Bar, you can enjoy fresh seafood, creative cuisine, and expertly crafted cocktails. Whether making selections from the raw bar, sharing small plates, or enjoying a hearty entree, the diverse menu showcases the best of coastal Georgia’s flavors. Sit back, sip, and toast to the start of your weekend on St. Simons Island!
Watch the Sunset on East Beach
While anywhere on St. Simons Island is a great place to catch a sunset, we’re partial to East Beach. The locals are warm and friendly, and watching their furry companions run and play is a delightful experience. The views are spectacular, and it’s a nice place to relax, dip your toes in the sand, and watch the incredible display as the sun dips below the horizon.
Day Two – Shopping and Museums
Fuel Up with Coffee
A day of shopping should always start with a morning brew, and we’ve got a few suggestions. Jittery Joe’s in Redfern Village and Wake Up Coffee Company in Aviator Plaza offer the perfect beginning to every day with cappuccinos, smoothies, lattes, and more! Grab a muffin, some avocado toast, or a parfait with berries before seeing the sights!
Hit the Museums
One of the best ways to dive into the history of St. Simons Island is with a visit to the WWII Homefront Museum. Here, you’ll discover coastal Georgia’s role in the war effort and learn about the local men and women who played a part in this pivotal time in history. The St. Simons Lighthouse Museum, located on the island’s southern tip, is just as fascinating. Browse the displays, learn about its use as a navigational aid, and climb the 129 steps to the top, just like the lightkeepers of years ago!
Go on a Trolley Tour
One of the best ways to see the sights is on a trolley tour! Purchase tickets online and embark on a lively 90-minute tour filled with history, local legends, and fascinating stories about St. Simons Island. With friendly guides and plenty of stops along the way, it’s an entertaining and easy way to get to know the island.
Check out the Shops
A trip to St. Simons wouldn’t be complete without a little shopping! Pier Village is a quaint waterfront hub filled with local boutiques, coastal treasures, and plenty of places to grab a snack or ice cream cone while you browse. Just a short drive away, Redfern Village offers a laid-back shopping experience tucked beneath beautiful oak trees, with trendy shops, home decor, and little treasures. Whether hunting for a souvenir, a breezy beach outfit, or a one-of-a-kind find, shopping in St. Simons is all about strolling, exploring, and soaking up the atmosphere!
Drinks and Dinner
Given your location, you can even walk to dinner! Georgia Sea Grill is an excellent choice, featuring local specialties, like low country crab soup, shrimp and grits, poached salmon, and crab cakes. They also offer vegan, poultry, and beef options and a delightful drink menu with a rotating lineup of beers on tap, craft and imports, and ciders.
Day Three – A Hearty Breakfast and Jekyll Island
Breakfast is served all day at Palmer’s Village Cafe, so feel free to sleep in. Once there, a hearty menu awaits, so come hungry! The omelet selection is off the charts, but the huevos rancheros are just as satisfying. Of course, you could opt for the banana pudding pancakes or the maple glaze and bacon french toast, but that’s your call!
Photo Session at Driftwood Beach
Since you’re only 30 minutes from Jekyll Island, a pit stop is definitely in order, and this beautiful stretch of coastline won’t disappoint. It’s a state park, so an entrance fee is required, but it’s minimal and completely worth it. For a unique beach experience, swing by Driftwood Beach on the island’s northern end. Uprooted and gnarled driftwood trees scattered along the coastline create an otherworldly landscape, making it one of the most photographed places on the island!
Pick Up Last-Minute Souvenirs
Jekyll Island boasts two popular shopping areas: Beach Village, located on Main Street near the beach, is filled with delightful shops and restaurants. The Pier Road Shops in the historic district is another option and a great place to pick up tee shirts, sunglasses, and gifts for friends and family before you head out of town.
Now that you know how to make the most of your weekend on St. Simons Island, all that’s left is finding the perfect place to stay—and we’ve got the perfect place! Hodnett Cooper offers a wide selection of vacation homes and condos near the beach and fun attractions. All that’s left to do is browse, book, and plan your getaway!P.S.
